“The key! I’ve been meaning to ask you about that.”
“What about it? It was just a key.”
“We talk pretty often now and I asked her about it. She said it was the exact same key she needed to unlock the door when you were leading her into the house on your wall. It’s obviously not a generic key you can run down to the home-improvement center and get stamped out. It was an ancient old-timey key.”
“It was a key I’d found on eBay last year. I bought a bunch of them. Keys are symbolic to most people, and patients come here to unlock their secrets and fears.”
“I get all of that but she said it was the key. How could you have known what she saw?”
“That’s simple. I showed her what to see.”
David wrinkled his nose. “Huh?”
“I had the key sitting on the edge of the table closest to her when she came in the room. Like most people her nerves occupied her waking mind but her subconscious absolutely saw it.”
“You see the details, Mackenzie. That’s why people come to see you.”
“The world wouldn’t exist without the details.”
“Agreed. So, no follow-up for Kerrington?”
“No, I suspect they’re going to be occupied with their newfound freedom for a while. When you finally realize it’s okay to be in love with your best friend, the term ‘like bunnies’ tends to get tossed around a bit.”
“How did you even know she was in love with her best friend? You knew it before she even walked in the door and I know everything her form said ’cause I filled it out.”
“Her best friend Danielle had actually been in to see me.”
David stared at her like a cat that’d just been told to fetch something. “All of your patients go through me and we don’t have any patient named Danielle.”
“That’s true but we do have a patient named Elle Dans who came in to talk about being a nervous eater. Ring any bells?” she smiled when his jaw dropped.
“The stacked chick who came in a while back? The one who looked like a model and you figured out her…” David shook his head when he put two and two together.
“Her anxiety stemmed from wanting her best friend and not thinking she was ever going to be good enough.”
“Okay, so I’ll give you the fact that they sound similar in what they desired but what are the odds they were each talking about the other woman? Slim-to-none probably.”
“I put the posthypnotic suggestion in Danielle’s head if she had any inclination at all that her best friend was truly interested she would get her to the demo at the club last month. I recognized Danielle immediately and knew there was a chance I could help them with their happily-ever-after. I ran with it and it sounds like it’s worked out wonderfully.”
“Talk about intensely straining doctor-patient privilege with that one.”
“How do you figure? I had no idea who she really was until after the hypnosis session at Pulse and she came and found me afterward. I didn’t know until she arrived whether or not they were coming. If she wasn’t really going to be up for it, I would have left it at that. Letting them deal with it as they saw fit, I still think they would have eventually found their way to be together. But talk about wasting time and energy. They could have set the wooden bar chairs on fire with how blistering hot their connection was.”
“You’re like a hypno-matchmaker.”
“Ha. Not hardly. If Kerrington hadn’t already been in love with her, nothing would have come of it. You know that. You can only increase feelings of bonding and closeness between two people or more. No one can create attraction out of thin air, at least that doesn’t last after you’re out of trance.
“I watched them the whole show. Every time I mentioned wanting someone, needing something, they’d lean toward each other, even if their eyes were closed. Subconsciously, they’ve probably been together for years. Their connection was electric. Reached me up on the stage and I thought I was immune to all that lovey-dovey stuff.”
“They’ll make it,” David championed. “I have every confidence, especially with the cravings Kerrington has for her. And Danielle has for her, now that I know who they are.”
The bell chimed on the front door and since it was tied into the building’s camera system, they both looked at the monitor on Dr. Mack’s desk to see who it was. A young couple walked in, hand in hand, the woman visibly pregnant and if the size of her stomach was any gauge, about ready to pop.
David flashed Dr. Mack a mischievous grin as he made his way toward her office door to go greet them. “There’s your three o’clock, aka your next victim.”
Dr. Mack smiled, rubbing her hands together. “Bring them to me.”
“You know you look like that creepy naked dude in The Hobbit movies when you do that, right?”
She leaned forward, laughing as she fake growled. “My precious…”
About Jennifer Kacey
I’m going to just jump right in and get the easy stuff out of the way up-front. I am a wife, mother and business owner in Texas with very long black hair and a penchant for high heels and pretty outrageous toe nail polish. I have a very supportive family that I love unconditionally and am fortunate enough to genuinely like and respect them as well.
I started reading romance back in college, liked it so-so, and then I found erotica. Stories a bit on the dark side, a lot on the naughty side, and at the risk of sounding cheesy, it felt like coming home. Finding a genre made just for minds like mine was an amazing revelation, and I swear the characters in my head haven’t stopped hounding me since!
Something I always love reading about other authors are the funny quirks and idiosyncrasies that make each of us unique, so I thought I’d share a few of mine. These are in no particular order and pretty random, so brace yourselves…
I am a morning person who doesn’t drink caffeine, and I am definitely a glass-half-full kind of girl. I have an extreme case of being left-hand stupid and am bad at all sports that end in “ball”! Hot weather is my favorite because I'm cold all the time, and I adore lying in the sun. You’ll find a closed sign hanging off my forehead at 10 p.m. pretty much every night when my brain clocks out. What’s weird is I can write ‘til the wee hours of the morning though. Probably because the characters just shove me aside so they can say their piece.
Ooh, and I never procrastinate! If something needs to be done today, it should have been finished yesterday. I call this fantastic; several people, who shall remain nameless, call it having a bug up my A**… I think I’ll stick with fantastic.
I refuse to use a flat sheet to sleep, I love perfume but only one kind, and before I die I want to own flip-flops in every color of the rainbow. And last but not least, the yea or nay on a particular food being deemed good or gross is based off of texture first, taste second.
I hope my writing speaks for itself, and I hope it speaks to you. The fact that I have the opportunity to share a little piece of myself with you absolutely floors me. On a daily basis I am overwhelmed by the good fortune that is my life, and vowed years ago never to take it for granted.
Best advice I’ve ever been given – find the real you and never settle for anything less! Well guess what? I found her! Lord help the rest of you.
